X Lamp

Course: ENTR 430 / Innovative Product Design

2012

Objective: Join art and engineering students to create the prototype of a unique lamp.

My role: Lamp design, lamp surface finish, marketing.

Concept: Design a lamp that caters to a demographic of young people who live in small spaces and change residences frequently. Compose the lamp of two interlocking wood pieces to form an “X”. These pieces easily break apart for packing. Task and ambient light are achieved by rotating the lamp.

Execution: Lamp concept and sketches were approved by the group. The engineering students finalized the fabrication and wiring plan. All lighting components are housed in a CNC routed void in one of the wood pieces. The bulb was covered with frosted acrylic glass to diffuse the light. It stands 9.5″ tall.
